Sanibel Island’s F.I.S.H. 10K Run For Good Cause

Yep, that’s right, the Second Annual F.I.S.H. 10K Run is coming up soon and we sure wouldn’t want you to miss it!

“Friends in Service Here (F.I.S.H.)” is a non-profit, volunteer organization that helps those in need on Sanibel and Captiva Islands and this year’s fundraising event is sure to be a big hit after seeing the turn out last year.

Over 500 runners from all over are scheduled to take off running at 7:30am on Saturday, October 16th.  Are you registered yet?

It’s great fun and it’s for a really great cause, so make sure you head over to the Sanibel Community Center, even if you’re not running, to experience the Expo and help cheer on the participants!

Oh, I almost forgot, if you’re coming from out of town, the Kona Kai Hotel located at 1539 Periwinkle Way, (239) 472-1001, will be offering a special rate of only $79/night if you mention the F.I.S.H 10K… Ya gotta love discounts!  😉

You can get more information at the Runner’s World website here:  Sanibel F.I.S.H. 10K Run

Hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend,

Fishermen Seeking Sanibel Island Home Deals

If you are a die-hard fisherman and you don’t live on Sanibel or Captiva Island, then what are you waiting for?

Homes couldn’t be better priced… ummm, can you say “serious buyers’ market”?  There is great inventory and, as you know, interest rates are at all-time lows.

Over this past two weeks, including the long 4th weekend, our resident “Fisherman Reporter”, Captain Bill Russell, reports that fabulous catches are being snagged early morning, before the heat and thunderstorms set in.  This summer’s been a hot one so far.

Tarpon season may be ending, but they are still plentiful, alongside 20+ inch trout, redfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel… Amazing!

You can read all about it here: Hot Days, Few Anglers, Good Fishing

So, if you’ve been pondering a move to this one-of-a-kind fishing paradise, Sanibel and Captiva, then stop making excuses and hop on it.  We’re just a quick and friendly phone call away!

Have a great weekend,

Bicycle Trekking – Sanibel to Captiva or Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

Are you a biker? Do you enjoy longer bike trips that take you all day to get through?

If so, then there are plenty of opportunities for you in and around Sanibel and Captiva.

We have some of the most beautiful trails that wind through lovely wildlife reserves, as well as over bridges and sand dunes, all with spectacular views.

Even outside of Sanibel and Captiva, over on the mainland, there are amazing trails that will take you through mangrove orchards and sabal palm trees.  One such place is the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park where you can easily spend the day enjoying the different trails and lookout points over the water.

One couple moved to Florida recently and shares their experience, which I thought was a nice way to introduce people outside of Florida to this low-maintenance outdoor activity with plenty of high-impact nature and wildlife.

You can read all about it here:  Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

Ok, that’s it for this week, hope you can get out and enjoy the trails this weekend!

Have a good one,

Sandy and Rob

Sanibel Island Inspiration – Theodore (Ted) Cross

Photo Courtesy of Jeff Klinkenberg and TampaBay.com

Update to the post below:

It is with great sadness to inform you, that on Sunday, Feb 28th, Ted Cross passed away at the age of 86 in Ft. Myers, FL.   The post below written just one week ago is a timely reminder of a great man and just how much Sanibel will miss him.  Our condolences go out to Ted’s family and friends and we thank you, Ted, for all of your great contributions to our islands and to the world!   You can read the NY Times article about Ted right here.

Hey all,

Today I thought we should put the spotlight on a very special winter resident on Sanibel Island – Theodore (Ted) Cross!

An amazing photographer that has a great story to tell and even better photos to show… a true genius behind the lens!

There is a beautifully written story about him on TampaBay.com by Jeff Klinkenberg detailing his life and quite profound thoughts on birds, photography and travel.  I think everyone can glean something from reading about Ted and his life.

I know it’s cliche to say that “Everyone has a story to tell”… but some stories truly need to be told.

Ted Cross is one of those people and we thank Jeff Klinkenberg for doing such a great job in telling it!   Thanks Jeff!

So, head over to read the entire article and get ready to be inspired!

Make it a great week,

Sandy and Rob

Sanibel and Captiva Islands – By Land or By Sea?

Sanibel Island Has Mosquitos?

Mosquito Spray

I laughed outloud as I wrote the title of this post! 🙂

Of course we have mosquitos on Sanibel Island… where in Florida are there no mosquitos, right?

Well, with the Fourth of July Parade and Festivities coming up tomorrow, I’m here to tell you to always be prepared with plenty of strong mosquito repellent.

One year I forgot and boy, did I ever pay for it!

Every year the Lee County Mosquito Control District spends the week leading up to the 4th of July festivities spraying the area like crazy to kill the mosquito larvae before they hatch, but unfortunately this past week has not cooperated with the rain and winds that we’ve had, so there may be a “few” more mosquitos than we would all like to see.  You can read the article that they posted today regarding their efforts right here:  Lee County Mosquito Eradication.  Despite the weather, it looks like they will still have most of the area sprayed before all the events begin this weekend, which shows the incredible effort being made on their part!

So, a big thanks go out to them from all of us…

Well, we look forward to seeing you all out and about at the parade and events tomorrow and if I run out of mosquito spray will you lend me some of yours?  😉

Have fun and enjoy the long weekend,

Sandy and Rob

Tandem Hang Gliding Over Sanibel Island!

Sandy Ramseth with Paradise Hang Gliding

It just doesn’t get any better than this!

Last week I did something that I’ve wanted to do for a looong time and that was “fly like a bird”… I went Hang Gliding over the Gulf!  Wow!

Even better than para-sailing because I was actually flying way higher at 2500 ft above the water, even over the tops of the para-sailers… let me tell you, it was truly a rush!!

I hooked up with none other than Scot over at Paradise Hang Gliding where you could not find a nicer guy to explain exactly what you need to do and to train you for the very gentle takeoff and landing from their boat just offshore.  I was surprised at just how “easy” it was and how relaxed I became AFTER I got into the air.  (Everyone’s a bit nervous before going up, don’t worry, it’s natural!)

Scot even posted on his blog about my “flight” which you can read about right here:  Sandy Ramseth – Paradise Tandem Hang Gliding

So, whether you are a local looking for something new to experience, a tourist on vacation, or someone planning to move to this beautiful area and wondering if there are great activities to partake in, this is one experience that you must try!  It is unforgettable (and affordable)!  So no excuses!!

I have an actual video of my own personal flight below, but it isn’t taken from above like the video that you see on the Paradise Hang Gliding website.   You can also see my video if you click on my Fackbook badge on the right side of this blog and then click on my “Videos” section within my Facebook page.  And there it is.

So, I hope this inspires you on many levels to get out there and do something new and exciting!

My job is to help you see just how amazing it is to live in this beautiful place and also to know just how to enjoy every minute of it!

Have a great long Easter weekend!

We’ll see you next week,

“How To ‘Do’ Florida” Is Coming To Sanibel Island

How To Do Florida

Have you guys heard about this new TV program featuring fun 30-minute “how-to” segments on outdoors activities across Florida?

Great idea!

The name of the new show airing its first episode on May 3rd at 9:30 am on channel MY-65 Sunday Mornings is called:

“How To ‘Do’ Florida”

Pretty cool name, huh?  According to their press release, they have a great line-up scheduled, starting with the New Smyrna Beach area where they plan to provide their viewers with an entertaining way to kayak, shrimp and surf the area!

The main reason I’m bringing this to your attention, apart from the educational and fun factor that I think this show will provide, is that we, on Sanibel Island are scheduled to be featured on the show!!

Isn’t that great?  They plan to feature our shelling and our wildlife, among all the other outdoor possibilities that we offer!  Not sure exactly when yet, so you’ll have to keep an eye out on their website, which I provided a link to just below.

“How To Do Florida” is the brainchild of  Chad Crawford, a third-generation native Floridian, who owns and operates a full-service multimedia production company called The Crawford Group in Lake Mary, FL.   Chad produces the show and also will be hosting each episode!

Native Floridians and “Florida Transplants” alike need to become more aware of all of the wonderful possibilites that we have available to us right here in our very own state, so thank you Crawford Group for giving us the “backstage pass” to Florida

That’s it for this week…

Have you seen the cool new videos under the “Open at your own RISK” tab above?  You might want to check those out…  🙂

Have a great weekend,

Sandy and Rob
