Blind Pass Dredging Project Nears Completion

Blind Pass Completion - Sanibel Captiva Islands

Well, we are not out of the woods just yet, but as each week goes by, more and more progress and improvement can be seen on Blind Pass.

It’s been awhile since the last update, and more than likely it was because there was a slow-down in dredging the Gulf due to two weeks of heavy waves at the end of April.

But, fortunately, the crew took full advantage of the “downtime” and was able to haul all of the non-beach compatible “debris” away to be disposed of… so, actually, no real time was lost at all.

The good news is that they are right on schedule and expect to make their “beginning of July” deadline for completion, which is amazing considering all that had to be done!

So, they are in the last stretch and will probably only have one more update, which of course, we will bring you as soon as it is available!

You can check all the juicy details of the full report below, or download it right here if you would prefer at Blind Pass Dredging May Update:

The Sanibel School – Top National Honors

The Sanibel School - Sanibel Island

As another school year winds down and kids start getting excited that the summer is finally almost here, one Florida school contines to outshine all the rest, and that school is The Sanibel School K-8.

Consistently ranking in the top 5% of all Florida grade schools with test scores in the 95% range over a period of years, The Sanibel School is really something for those of us on Sanibel Island to be proud of, whether you actually have kids attending the school or not.

Below are two charts, as well as a link to the test scores and the relationship of our students as compared to other schools throughout Florida, so that you can see for yourself:  The Sanibel School Test Scores .

The Sanibel School Statistics

Impressive results for a school of under 400 students from K-8 and an average class size of between 40-50 children and a teacher to student ratio of 1 : 17.  Not bad.

The Sanibel School Statistics

So, have no fears when it comes to putting your kids into the schools on Sanibel Island, they are some of the very best that the U.S. has to offer!

Until next week, have a good one,

Pinoccio’s Italian Ice Cream on Sanibel Island

Pinoccio's Italian Ice Cream - Sanibel Island

Beautiful island location + Amazing Italian ice cream

What more could you ask for?

Well, Pinoccio’s Italian Ice Cream on Periwinkle Way has been around for 30 years and continues to be a hot spot for local regulars and tourists alike!

Recently named one of National Geographic’s Top 10 “Best of Everything for Families” in Southern Florida, Tom and Donna Puma really put their heart and soul into their ice cream and you can certainly taste it.

It’s always fun to spotlight people on the island that go the extra mile and I, personally, would classify heading off to Tuscany to train with an Italian expert in “gelato making” as going above and beyond what normal folks would do.  But, then again, as I mentioned, Pinoccio’s Ice Cream is far from “normal”.

If you are new to Sanibel or planning to move here, then rest assured you can check off your list “to find a great local ice cream spot”…

Young and “old” alike stand in long lines and await their turn to choose from the more than 100 different delicious flavors.

Words cannot describe it, you must go there!

Now that’s a great way to start your weekend!

See ya’ next week,

Sandy and Rob

p.s.     Psst!  The flavor “Sanibel Krunch” is to die for!

Mother’s Day on Sanibel Island

Mothers Day on Sanibel Island

I thought that it would be fun today to talk about all the different things that mothers on Sanibel Island could do to pamper themselves a little bit on this special day!

Every mother knows (or should know) that if she doesn’t take care of herself, she certainly has nothing to give those that she’s taking care of… right?

So, all the better to take one day of the year and allow yourself to be taken care of by those who love you…

Some of the popular things to do include going to Sunday brunch or dinner with the family.  Nearly every restaurant on Sanibel or Captiva will have some sort of Mother’s Day special, so just google the restaurant’s name and you should be able to find their website and their menu specials for this wonderful day!

I also know that Dolce Vita has a jazz brunch and the Thistle Lodge at the Casa Ybel Resort has a Mother’s Day brunch as well.  The Old Captiva House would be another excellent choice!  There are just too many to name, so please check with your favorite restaurant and they will give you all the details.

Mother’s Day also inherently implies “a day of pampering”, don’t you think?

Below I’ve listed a link to 5 of the health spas on the island that can give you a beautiful day of relaxation and “alone time”, as well as rejuvenate your body and soul.

This link is to the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce:

So, Rob and I wish all of you mothers out there a very Happy Mother’s Day and we hope that all of you out there, mothers and non-mothers alike, as well as fathers and anyone else, also have a great weekend!

Until next week,

Sandy and Rob

Sanibel Island’s Turtle Season Begins Today!

Baby Turtle on Sanibel Island

Yes, it’s that time again…

It’s Turtle Season!

One of our most treasured and beautiful natural phenomenon here on Sanibel and Captiva Islands is the arrival of the hundreds of female loggerhead turtles that make their way to our beaches and hatch their eggs.

This process officially begins on May 1st and ends on October 31st of every year.

There are many island regulations that go into effect when Turtle Season arrives, some of which include the dimming of city lights that disorient the hatchlings as they make their way toward the sea via the moonlight.

Another biggie is the careful use of furniture on the beaches, as well as simply wandering around and stepping on turtle nests in the sand unknowingly.

You can find the most up-to-date information on this subject over at the website of our friends at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation or there’s also some great information over at MySanibel.com

Have a great weekend!

Until next week,

Sandy and Rob
